June is Pride Month!
This month, all across the United States, people will be celebrating Pride Month with parades, concerts, memorials, and sharing of stories. According to youth.gov, Pride Month is celebrated annually in June to honor the 1969 Stonewall riots and works to achieve equal justice and equal opportunity for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) Americans.
What if someone has a young person in their life navigating their own sexuality? How can trusted adults be a support?
Support from Trusted Adults can look like:
- Provide a judgment free zone. Be open to conversations and questions.
- Show acceptance. Not only acceptance of your young person, but showing acceptance to others of different identities as well.
- Expose your young person to diverse populations in the media and community.
- Encourage extra support, either from LGBTQ+ groups or therapy.
Having support from Trusted Adults can help combat the bullying and possible mental health stress that youth might experience while they discover their own identities.
